JK Rowling: Fringe the Benefits of Failure

Rowling talks about how the speaker at her commencement ceremony was not memorable, and that she wanted to be. This inspired me to do things that will be memorable, not just half ass things. She also talked about not being afraid to be poor, this is something that really made me think because I always wanted to live in an expensive apartment in the Back Bay in Boston, and have lots of trendy clothes, but her speech made me think that if that happens it'd be great, but as long as I'm happy and can support myself that'll be just fine too. I like how she also said it was ok to fail, because that is something that I think so many people fear, and it made me think about taking more risks.


Steve Jobs: How to Live Before You Die

Steve Jobs talks about how the scariest choices often have the best results and how it is important to fallow your intuition. This made me think about how myself and many of my other peers have already made a scary choice by majoring in art. It is probably not what most of our parents had hoped for or something that we know will guarantee us with success, but we all took that risk anyway because we know its what will make us the most happy in life. He also said how its ok to fail and that sometimes these failures can lead to better things. He says to find what you love and do it greatly and to never settle. As artists I think it is definitely important that we never settle, especially with our art work. It is important to push all of our work to the limit and not to leave it alone till we are completely satisfied with it.

Why Design? Phillippe Stark

This podcast was kind of confusing for me. He talks about how when he designs he does not go looking for ideas they come to him while he is doing an everyday activity, like brushing his teeth. He may think of some way to improve this process, but he did not start by staring at a tooth brush, he was just brushing his teeth. This seems like a more natural and better way to come up with new designs, kind of like how were not supposed to go looking for inspirational pictures monday afternoon, we're supposed to have our cameras with us all of the time for when these inspirational things come to us. Stark also talks about evolution, and how the top person never thinks things will get any better but of course they will we not stop evolving. He wants the next generation to be able to tell their own story and he wants us to leave them with the tools and blank slate or mind to do that.
